Area and Development Manager - Libraries

Job Description

At the heart of Greater Manchester’s innovative strategy for delivering real benefits for its communities, Salford is a strongly led city with a long and important history.  Having successfully fostered considerable economic development and population growth, it is leading the way in securing a bright and exciting future for its residents.  At the same time, there is both a real commitment to addressing the challenges faced by many of its citizens - not least around education and skills, health and deprivation - and a clear consensus that the city’s vibrant library service must continue to play a significant part in improving lives.

We are looking for an experienced, confident, proactive and flexible leader, with a proven track record of working in a relevant sector, to join our team of Area and Development Managers, responsible for both day-to-day operations and development activities, and for ensuring a unified approach to service delivery across the city.  Your focus for development would be children, including Early Years, and young people with a diverse range of needs and approaches to reading and literacy.  Enabling all children and young people to learn and reach their potential is a central priority for the libraries service and the city, therefore experience of working within this area is desirable.  Reporting to the Deputy Head of Libraries, you would manage staff working within this area of focus and also those responsible for day-to-day operational effectiveness.

You should have appropriate knowledge, skills and experience and strong management and leadership skills.  You would need to be empathetic and creative, resilient and collegial, and passionate about libraries and how they support people, communities and cities.

A professional library qualification is desirable but not essential for the right person with a proven track record.

Hours of work will be mainly Monday – Friday and can be negotiated.  Some flexibility will be required and there will be opportunities to work from home, depending on service need.
