About the job
The Assistant Librarian post is based at the Prince Consort's Library (PCL), the specialist military library of the Army Library and Information Service (ALIS). ALIS provides library and information services to Army personnel, both regular and reserves, worldwide and supports information needs related to operations, defence engagement and professional development.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week
The role plays a vital part in running the Prince Consort’s Library and includes management of current awareness services, answering enquiries using electronic and hardcopy resources, cataloguing, indexing and classification of new books and articles, and promotion of library services to customers.
You will act as co-ordinator for the ALIS News Updates product: liaising with customers, managing distribution lists, templates and producing statistics. You will also produce your own allocation of News Updates weekly.
You will deliver specialist military information services to the Armed Forces in support of operations, training, exercises and military education courses, including answering enquiries and producing country information packs.
To sustain and enhance the service you will catalogue, classify and index military books and journal articles for inclusion in the library catalogue.
You will provide guidance and instruction to users on the full range of library facilities, including the Internet and other electronic sources, books and periodicals.
You will deliver information literacy training where appropriate to customers seeking help.
You will participate in the promotion of PCL and ALIS wide information services to the Armed Forces by briefing courses in units and Arms schools, and when units and individuals visit PCL.
You will have line management responsibility for four administrative staff.
You will deputise for the Librarian in the day to day running and management of the Prince Consort’s Library (PCL).
You must have a Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) approved qualification or an overseas qualification recognised by CILIP as equivalent. Alternatively, you will have achieved CILIP certification (ACLIP) and have equivalent experience of professional information work or have an NVQ level 4 (or equivalent) in library and information studies plus experience of professional information work.
