 Job Description - Assistant Librarian


Job purpose

To assist the Library Director in managing, promoting and developing the library in accordance with the school’s objectives.  To foster a love of reading.


Main duties

In close coordination with and under the direction of the Library Director:


  • Encourage reading and the enjoyment of literature by having a love of books and keeping up to date with current trends both in school and generally.
  • Facilitate and create resources for a range of activities and clubs within the library
  • Supervise students using the library.Help to maintain a quiet, welcoming and safe environment, conducive with learning and study.
  • Register Study Sessions and report absences to the relevant Head of Year.
  • Supervise tests.
  • Issue, return and shelve library’s stock.Manage reservation requests.
  • Process new resources and display them to encourage borrowing.
  • Assist students and staff to search the library catalogue and locate resources.
  • Help to ensure the smooth running of the library computers and the printer.  Report faults as necessary.
  • Cataloguing books, journals and magazines and promote their use.
  • Ensure that the Library area of Spaces is kept up to date, paying particular attention to the login information for online subscriptions.
  • Have a good understanding of the Library Management System (Heritage) and the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue). Training will be given as necessary.
  • Review stock and update the catalogue by weeding and stocktaking.
  • Produce recommended reading lists for pupils and staff.
  • Cover for the Librarian, occasionally, due to off-site library group meetings.


 The post holder may perform other such duties reasonably required by the line manager or the Headmistress.  The job description is not intended to be all-inclusive and may change to reflect the needs of the school and enhance the smooth operation of the library.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A minimum of English and Mathematics GCSE grade A-B (or equivalent)
  • First Aid at work qualification or a willingness to achieve this (training can be provided)


  • Relevant degree
  • Experience of working in a library or bookshop


Personal skills and qualities

  • Personal warmth, good rapport with pupils and colleagues
  • Good oral and written English skills
  • An interest in children and young people’s literature
  • A personal enthusiasm for books and reading
  • Flexibility and a willingness to undertake a wide range of library routines and to learn new skills
  • IT skills including MS Office and use of databases and spreadsheets.
