Job Description

CILIP, the Library and Information Association is seeking a chair for CILIP Southwest.

A rewarding volunteer leadership opportunity

Are you passionate about the library, information and knowledge profession?
Would you like to help shape sector conversations, support your professional community, and develop your leadership skills?

CILIP Southwest, a CILIP Regional Member Network, is seeking a new Chair to lead our committee and help us deliver meaningful, inclusive activities for members.

Why volunteer as Chair?

This is a fantastic opportunity to:

  • Develop strategic leadership and governance experience.
  • Build confidence in chairing, public speaking and facilitation.
  • Expand your professional network across the sector.
  • Influence discussions and help shape practice in your area of interest/practice.
  • Make a positive impact by supporting the professional development of others.
  • Be part of a friendly, supportive volunteer community.

This is a voluntary role, ideal for anyone looking to grow their skills or step into leadership within a respected professional body.

What you’ll do

 As Chair, you will:

  • Provide positive, inclusive leadership to the committee.
  • Chair meetings and help set the direction of the group.
  • Represent the group within CILIP and the wider profession.
  • Support planning of activities, events and communications.
  • Foster a welcoming community where members feel engaged and valued

You don’t need prior chairing experience. We welcome volunteers at all career stages.

Who we’re looking for

  • Good communicators
  • Collaborative, organised and inclusive
  • Motivated to support the profession and develop new skills

Eligibility:

  • You must be a current CILIP member.
  • You should have recent experience working in a library, information service or related sector.

Time commitment

Typically, 1-2 hours per week, depending on the time of year. We aim to hold four committee meetings per year, via Microsoft Teams, as well as an AGM (either online or as part of an in-person professional development day for members). Additional ad hoc sub-committee meetings may be necessary, for example to discuss a specific project or plan an event.

Term length is typically 2–3 years.

How we support you

You will receive:

  • A full induction and guidance from CILIP staff.
  • Access to resources and templates.
  • Opportunities for peer support from other groups on a dedicated online forum for Member Network volunteers.
  • A dedicated CILIP email address and Office 365 account for collaboration and document management.
  • Reimbursement of reasonable expenses such as travel for in-person events and a 10% discount on your CILIP membership.

Our commitment to inclusion

We welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds, including ethnically diverse, disabled, and LGBTQ+ professionals who have historically been under‑represented in our committees.

How to apply

Please send a short expression of interest (up to 250 words) outlining why you’d like to volunteer and what you hope to bring to the role.
