  • Got the leadership skills to support our expert judges and raise our profile?
  • Want to take a lead role in running the country’s oldest children’s book awards?

If so, we want to hear from you, as there’s an opportunity to become the Chair of the Working Party that organises the CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Awards and shadowing scheme. 

This is a volunteer position that will start in July 2019 and last for three years. You do not have to be a member of CILIP or the Youth Libraries Group to apply, but we would expect you to join if you are successful.

About the awards

The CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals are awarded by a judging panel of children's and youth librarians. The Carnegie Medal is awarded for outstanding writing and the Kate Greenaway for outstanding illustration. CILIPs mission for the Awards is to inspire and empower the next generation to create a better world through books and reading. Find out more at

The Awards shadowing scheme engages thousands of children and young people to read and engage with the books on the shortlist every year. Thousands of reviews are posted each year on the shadowing website, and shadowers contribute creative responses to the shortlisted books through blogs, videos, artwork and their group homepages. Shadowing engages thousands of children and young people with amazing books, authors and illustrators. See
