CILIP in Surrey has recently folded due to lack of members. This is a shame, as this means that informational professionals in Surrey are losing out on committee support.

Over the years the committee members of Cilip in Surrey (previously Surrey Library and Information Group) have been involved in running many successful events ranging from visits to the historic Libraries of both Houses of Parliament to the ultra modern way of working in the new WWF HQ, and summer outings to, amongst others, Wisley, Chawton and Strawberry Hill House.

A wide variety of CPD events have been run by the committee including introductions to Professional Registration, Social Media, Maker Spaces, e-book publishing and How to write a successful bid. CPD events really do help and encourage members in seeking professional qualifications.

We have also run Christmas quizzes which were always well attended.

Being on the committee gives people an opportunity to meet and work with library staff in other sectors and over the years we have benefitted from visiting the libraries of our committee members, including local colleges and the Surrey History Centre. For example, one of our committee members found it a great way to learn about other sectors as she worked for Ministry of Defence and felt in a narrow functional specialism.

It is always a valuable experience to work with other professionals and this is particularly true for those who are doing professional registration.

Surrey is rich in different types of libraries, and has good links to London and the rest of the Home Counties.
