HLG Awards Lead/Co-Lead – role description

The Health Libraries Group (HLG) is currently looking for a HLG Awards Lead/Co-Lead. This is an excellent opportunity to join a friendly committee and develop new skills.  If you are interested in developing promotion and networking skills, we’d love to hear from you! 

Purpose of role: To administer the HLG awards and bursaries 

Responsibilities:

1. Manage the judging process for each award.

2. Manage the applications process for each award.

3. Maintain accurate records of past winners for each award.

4. Respond to all enquiries relating to the HLG awards and bursaries.

5. Recruit and maintain sponsorship and foster partnership working for the bi-annual RIWA award.

6. Report on the bursaries and awards for the HLG Annual Report.


• Ensure, applications forms and ‘Terms and Conditions’ are correct and up to date for all awards and bursaries.
• Ensure awards and bursaries are promoted to HLG membership.
• Ensure individual awards are advertised in a timely manner.
• Keep the Committee up to date on all awards and bursaries matters.
• Promote the bursaries and awards to members and potential members of HLG.
• Ensure the HLG website information on the bursaries and awards is accurate and up to date.

Time commitment
The amount of time this role takes up will vary and may be up to 1 hour per week with peaks around December/January through to mid year as this is when the bulk of the awards are advertised.

As a committee member, you will be expected to:
• Attend 4 committee meetings per year.
• Attend the bi-annual HLG conference.
• Attend the AGM.

Committee members serve a 3 year term to allow both consistency and fresh input over time. However, members can be re-elected for a further 3 year term.

Qualifications, skills, knowledge and experience

Essential or desirable
Member of HLG (through CILIP membership) Essential 
Evidence of recent* experience of working in the health and social care information sector at a senior level Essential 
Organisational skills, including accurate record keeping and handling enquiries quickly and efficiently Essential
Good oral and written communication skills with attention to detail Essential
Negotiating, influencing and persuading Desirable
Teamworking Essential
* Recent means that a person has worked in a health and social care library or related service area within the last two years.

Accountability
Committee members are responsible to the Chair of HLG. 
Performance and ability to commit to the role will be discussed with the Chair as required.
If these areas are not satisfactory then the Committee member can resign the post.
