About the job
The Librarian post is based at Services Central Library (SCL), the non-military library of the Army Library and Information Service (ALIS). ALIS provides library and information services to Army personnel, both regular and reserves worldwide, and supports information needs related to operations, defence engagement and professional development.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
The postholder is the Librarian at Services Central Library as well as managing other smaller libraries in the UK and overseas. The post offers developmental opportunity of line management experience as well as offering key information services supporting language information needs across the Army and the personal and professional needs of Army personnel.
You will be responsible for the management and development of Services Central Library.
You will manage expenditure of all SCL budgets and performance management of SCL business.
You will act as the Systems Manager of the SCL Local Area Network and the Library Management System (LMS).
You have responsibility for the Quality assurance at SCL.
You will have line management responsibility for 1 band D member of staff and act as Countersigning officer for 4 administrative staff at SCL.
You will deliver information literacy training where appropriate to customers seeking help.
You will participate in the promotion of SCL and ALIS wide information services to the Armed Forces by briefing courses in units and Arms schools, and when units and individuals visit SCL.
You will be responsible for the management and development of 9 branch libraries: 4 in the UK, 3 worldwide and 2 in Northern Ireland.
You must have a Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) approved qualification or an overseas qualification recognised by CILIP as equivalent. Alternatively, you will have achieved CILIP certification (ACLIP) and have equivalent experience of professional information work or have an NVQ level 4 (or equivalent) in library and information studies plus experience of professional information work.
