Applications are invited from graduates (and those expecting to graduate in 2019) for the one-year full-time post of graduate trainee in Newnham College Library, starting September 2019. The aim of the trainee post is to provide systematically planned and supervised experience of work in an academic library to a graduate intending to go on to take a postgraduate qualification in library and information studies. The trainee will assist the Librarian and Senior Library Assistant in the day-to-day running of the library, and will be given training and experience in issue desk and enquiry work, handling book loans and returns, online cataloguing of books, classification and using the library management system for a variety of tasks. In addition to regular duties, specific project work will be assigned by the Librarian, and opportunities will be given to meet other Cambridge library trainees, visit libraries and attend relevant professional meetings.
The successful candidate will be a graduate with excellent communication skills, who is able to demonstrate a serious interest in pursuing a career in Librarianship, and who has the ability to work effectively as part of a small staff team. The appointment will be for one year (fixed term contract), from 2 September 2019 to 28 August 2020.
