Job Description

Library Graduate Trainee

Full time, Fixed Term (FTA)

Kew Gardens, Richmond

Kew is the world’s leading botanic gardens, at the forefront of plant and fungal science, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major visitor attraction.

We want a world where plants and fungi are understood, valued and conserved – because our lives depend on them.

We use the power of our science and the rich diversity of our gardens and collections to provide knowledge, inspiration and understanding of why plants and fungi matter to everyone.

Kew has one of the world’s foremost plant science libraries, with wide-ranging collections of botanical books, journals, illustrations and archives, developed over the course of its 170-year history.

The library holds many old and rare books and provides opportunities to gain experience in working with special collections.

Each year, Kew’s Library, Art & Archives offers a paid traineeship for graduates interested in careers in librarianship.

Over the course of the year, the trainee will catalogue new acquisitions, staff the Enquiry Desk, maintain library usage statistics and undertake project work with the Library, Art and Archives collections.

Candidates should have: a good degree in a relevant subject, the intention to do a professional library qualification, experience in dealing with the public and ideally of working in a library, the ability to work independently and plan your own time, excellent written, oral communication and IT skills, and attention to detail.

Candidates should not already have undertaken a Graduate Traineeship, or hold a professional library qualification.

Salary will be £20,176 per annum, equivalent to £10.31 per hour. The actual salary will depend on the hours worked. We offer a fantastic range of benefits including a broad range of Learning and Development opportunities, with access to the Civil Service training curriculum, generous annual leave entitlement for new starters, family friendly policies, a choice of competitive pensions and flexible benefits scheme.
