New Professionals Support Officer Role Description
Role: New Professionals Support Officer for the CILIP East of England Member Network Committee
Purpose of Role: To engage with students registered on CILIP-accredited professional qualifications in the region, and those new to the profession, and to report back on activities to the Committee at quarterly meetings.
Requirements: Whilst it is not mandatory for the officer to be a current or recent student, it is beneficial to the role to have established contacts at higher education institutions offering CILIP-accredited qualifications. This may be through a current or recent period of study or employment, or professional networks. If there are no existing connections, you may still take on the role provided you are able to be proactive in establishing and maintaining contacts.
Key Responsibilities:
- To engage with and welcome all students within the East of England who are registered on a CILIP-accredited professional qualification.
- This may include distance-learners on courses delivered outside the region.
- To provide information to the Committee about academic issues concerning current student cohorts.
- This may include recruiting student representatives from course groups to act as spokespersons for group requests and concerns.
- To engage with New Professionals in the region, including recent graduates from CILIP-accredited professional qualifications, aspiring and young library and information professionals, and those new to the profession following a mid-career change, redundancy, and retirement.
- To suggest, oversee and contribute to events and training relevant to students and new professionals.
- Preparing and distributing event publicity in conjunction with other members of the Committee responsible for marketing and publicity.
- To promote the Student Bursary award given by CILIP East of England.
- To promote the membership and benefits of the East of England Member Network and CILIP within the library and information profession.
Committee member expectations
The amount of time this role takes up will vary and may be 1-3 hours per week, though around Committee events and meetings this is likely to increase.
Committee members are expected to be proactive and to participate in committee discussions (usually by emailing list) between meetings and events
All members of CILIP East committee will be expected to attend up to 4 Committee meetings per year (either online or in person before a scheduled event).
Officers, editors and treasurers will be expected to provide short quarterly update reports emailed in advance of Committee meetings and presented during meetings.
Involvement in up to two events per year. This could involve taking the lead or co-lead on organising an event, help with event organisation in advance and or help on the day of the event.
