Change your career, change lives

The Open University is the UK’s largest university, a world leader in flexible part-time education combining a mission to widen access to higher education with research excellence, transforming lives through education.

The role

The Senior Library Manager (Student and Academic Services) provides a pivotal role within the Library, managing the relationship with one of our four faculties, and leading a functional team.

We work in partnership with the whole OU community to design and deliver a Library service which continually improves to meet the needs of the University. Key to this is proactive relationship management with faculty colleagues to ensure we understand their expectations; coupled with your professional knowledge of library content, skills and support services.

You will manage the strategic relationships with one of our faculties, ensuring the Library’s learning and teaching services provide a sector-leading contribution to student success. You will also lead one of our functional team areas, ensuring it remains customer-focussed, championing our continual-improvement culture in partnership with the other Senior Library Managers. As a member of the Library’s Extended Leadership Team you will play a key role in shaping the Library’s operational plan in line with University strategy, insight and your own professional expertise.

Skills and experience

You will be educated to degree level in librarianship or information science (or currently studying towards it) and have up-to-date professional knowledge in the field of library service provision. You will have proven experience building and maintaining strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders and colleagues. This will include experience of leading cross-functional activities in a complex environment where you will be required to co-ordinate and manage team workloads in coordination with other colleagues. You will be confident working with qualitative and quantitative data to develop and implement library strategy and planning associated services.

What you get in return

Benefits include a supportive and friendly working environment, 33 days holiday per annum pro rata plus Bank Holidays and Christmas closure days and an attractive pension proposition.

On top of a competitive salary and pension scheme, we offer many staff benefits including generous leave allowance, flexible working, fee waiver for all OU courses and qualifications, childcare vouchers, cycle-to-work scheme and secure bike parking, free on-site car parking, on-site nurseries, and many different sports and leisure clubs offering discounts and other benefits.

Due to social distancing measures this position is initially home-based. Typically, the position is based at the OU’s Milton Keynes campus, in easy reach of Milton Keynes Central railway station (32 minutes from London Euston) and the M1 and A5. Future campus-based working may be required.
